Best On Page SEO strategies for 2022

E-A-T

E-A-T or Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness is used to analyze the quality of Google’s search results. It analyses the credibility of content creators, web page authority, and overall past performance of websites altogether.

Title Tag

It is one of the pillars of SEO and an important SEO ranking signal. The title tag is the HTML tag that can be seen in the head section of the webpage source code.

Meta Description

A meta description is the HTML tag that summarises the content of the webpage. It is present beneath the URL of the page. It enables visitors to understand the content before opening the page and it affects CTR (click-through-rate).

Importance of H1 Tag

Lengthy headlines don’t have any impact on SEO and the headline which is relevant to the content containing the keyword can make interest in the visitors. It is the element that defines the overall topic of the page.

Role of Other Heading Tags

These tags are used within the content to give them a proper structure, for instance, the H1 tag is used for the main heading, and other heading tags which are H2, H3, and H4 used to specify sub-headings on the webpage.

SEO Writing

It is the optimization of content to get better rankings. Content is the cornerstone of SEO and proper planning and creation of content results in a better experience for the user.

Avoid Keyword Cannibalization

When a website has multiple pages for the same search query, it is keyword cannibalization. For Google, both pages are competing themselves for the ranking and it only has a negative impact.

Content Audit

A content audit is a process of analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the content. It helps to understand the deficiency of the content and to improve it.

Image Optimization

Images are one of the main factors that attract the user and also give contextual details to search engines. It also gives life to the content and enhances the interaction with the audience.

User Engagement

With the high quality of the content, users stick to the page and take action. Search engines want to offer relevant and meaningful results to the search query of the user so that it prefers pages with more actions by visitors. There are several types of user engagement including CTR and dwell time. Google considers various factors to provide the most relevant result to the visitor.

Optimizing Crawl Budget and Crawl Rate

Most of you might have not even heard about these terminology. So, lets first get on to understand what is crawl budget and proceed further on various of crawl budget and crawl rate.
What is Crawl Rate?
The rate or frequency at which bots visit your website for crawling is known as Crawl rate.
What's the definition of crawl budget in SEO?
Crawl budget is the number of times a search engine bot known as spider crawls your web page in a given or allotted  time. The phrase 'Crawl budget' is coined by the SEO network.
For example, if a spider hits your web page 51 times per day then your sites crawl budget is 1530 per month.
You can see your sites crawl budget in your website search console and scroll to the crawl stats section under crawl and notice your websites average crawl budget that is average number of pages crawled per day.
Why should you care about crawl budget?
Although crawling is mentioned as not a ranking factor but crawl budget has its importance in SEO. Don't you want your website been crawled immediately after the content of the site is updated; and get the updated pages or newly added ones indexed? This is why you need to care about crawl budget. Because if you wont pay necessary attention to the crawl budget then bots won't crawl your site or page that is to be crawled, there won't be chance for the most relevant visitors to be brought to the site.
What is the crawl budget for my website?
Google serves you with the best and most appropriate information about your sites crawl budget via Google search console. The value marked in the above image is your crawl budget per day, which means 32 pages of your site are being crawled per day. So for 30days if this crawl budget remains same then it would turn to 30X32=960 pages per month are being crawled in your website.
How do you optimize your crawl budget?
Optimizing crawl budget is saving on wasting. Fixing the issues that dont waste crawling leads to improved and useful crawling and thus improved indexation. Most common issues that many websites see include but not limited to and if fixed would improve crawl budget are:

  • URLs with parameters like color, size, etc.,
  • Duplicate content like pages with tags, search pages in the website
  • Poor content quality
  • Broken links
  • Avoid including non-indexable or non-pages like redirection pages in the sitemap.
  • Make sure your site don't have pages with poor load time or those that never load
  • Don't maintain too many pages that are not indexable
  • Maintaining good internal linking structure.

How do you increase your website's crawl budget?
Crawl budget although not mentioned directly., has a good noticeable impact on the page authority. So to improve page authority work on gaining trust worthy and genuine external links and the rest play of crawling will be taken by the bots. Its proved from Yauhen Khutarniuk’s experiment that there is a very close correlation between external links and the number of times spiders visit your website. Check the below image of his experiment.
Khutarniuk's experiment results
How does Google’s crawl budget work?
Google has a simple crawling structure that's put in the form of the below image.
Capture d’eÃŒcran 2017-05-18 aÃŒ€ 10.00.44
There are few components of a page that Google considers for Crawling, few of which are listed below:

  • Depth of page
  • Page rank of the website
  • Internal page rank
  • What type of document is it; PDF or HTML or TXT or anything else. PDF type has good crawl rate.
  • Internal links quantity
  • If included in the sitemap
  • Importance and / or quality of the Anchor's
  • Content quality
  • Websites home page importance
Why limit Crawling and How to limit Crawling?

Over crawling is not suggested as it has a direct on your servers response. So always maintain and limit your sites crawling to the best. With that said here is how you can limit Google's crawling of your site.

  • On the Google's Search Console, go to the site that you are about to work on.
  • Click on the gear icon and look for site settings option and the click on it.
  • Go to crawl rate section and chose the option you want to maintain a desired crawl rate.

This newly custom set crawl rate is valid for 90 days only. For sites with a "calculated as optimal" crawl rate then you have to raise a special request by filling a form available at https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/googlebot-report.

How Search Engines Work?

World around has turned Digital making everyone now open a digital device and search for something daily, actually many times a day but have you ever thought of knowing how these search engines work and how are results that best answers your search query thrown on your screen. Here is the answer for your question.

With no search engines there would be no access to the world of information. So let see how these search engines work..

Before proceeding further lets understand what a search engine is? A web search engine is a software system that searches the world wide web for the requested search query and gathers all the information relevant and throws them in an order, sorted based on the respective search engines algorithms.
So, How do they perform this job of finding results? For this question to be answered, lets move to the main point of How do Search Engines work?
Search Engines usually perform 3 different activities as Crawling, to discover content over the web; Indexing, to track and store the content crawled; and Retrieving, fetch relevant content for the search query of a user in the search engine.

Crawling:
The whole work of a Search Engine starts with Crawling which is the all about acquisition of data about a website.
As a part of this step, websites are scanned and details of each page like titles, descriptions, images, keywords, other linked pages, etc.is collected. Some other crawlers also collect details about page layout, if the links pointing are crammed in, where the advertisements if any are to be placed etc.
A Search Engine's automated robots also called Spiders visit page after page as quick as possible by following various links available.
How Do Search Engines Work? web crawler diagram
A web crawler visits a page and then collects all the links in the page and adds them to the queue of links to be crawled and then do the same for the next links in queue. Crawlers also visit back old sites to look for any updates of the content. With that said, any site or page linked to an already existing indexed page will be crawled eventually. The rate at which sites are crawled varies from site to site, some are crawled more frequently while some others are crawled to a great depth.

Indexing:
Indexing is the step that falls after crawling. A site or a page when crawled is further processed and stored in a database.
Imagine making a list of all house addresses in your town, their owners details, tenants details, floor count, etc. Crawling is going through each house whereas indexing is listing them in your storage space.
This is wrt a small town, now apply the same task to the whole world. That's a simple easy to understand version of what search engines like Google does, storing all the data collected in their huge and vast data centers in the thousands and thousands of petabyte worth of drives.

Retrieving and Ranking:
Retrieving is the process of returning the most relevant page results for your search query. Each Search Engine has its own search criteria based on which the results are displayed to match your search query at best after going through the billions and trillions of pages in their database.
Search Engines are now keeping their search algorithms in mystery to avoid web creators from unfairly climbing the top as in the early days of Search Engines usage.
If you feel still confused a bit or want to have more understanding of a search engine works, here, go through this video below.

How Are Search Engines So Fast?

Have you ever come across the problem searching your computer for a file that has been saved in an unnoticed location by mistake and closed. Remember how slow your system works for searching that file from an unknown location from the storage of just a few hundreds of files. Now go to a search engine like google or bing or any other and search for a query, you get the results at the blink of an eye. How do you think is this possible for search engines to work so fast?Because search engines unlike our computers won't look for each and every file every time you do a search. They have the pages crawled and indexed and when searched for a query, it takes very less time to retrieve the stored results on to the screen.

How do search engines rank websites?
That used to be a very easy job for search engines to rank websites in the beginning. It just is the matter of finding the pages with keywords used in the pages and build back links. Thus making the job of an SEO simple by just filling the page with keywords multiple times and building huge links in whatever and every means possible. But this turned out the search results spamy.
Now Search Engines turned far smarter that they developed Algorithms that use various factors to rank the web pages. Few of the vast list of factors include but nor limited to keywords in the page content, on-page factors, off-page factors, social popularity, content quality, backlinks quality and quantity, etc.
Websites that rank better get positioned in the best places in the search results page.

Why do search engines give different results?
Yes, Google search results are not the same for everyone and vary from person to person and different from computer to computer. This is to better facilitate the user with their interests. Few reasons behind seeing different results are your physical location, search history, etc.

How do search engines make money?
While every search results so accurately and perfectly delivered at free of cost, what do you think will run these search engines to pay for its employees? Its obviously their ad network that serve the purpose.
Image result for search engines ads
When you search for a query along with the results, search engines like google also some most relevant ads to the right and on the top of the SERP. Those ads that you see around the search results are one of the money earners.
About 85% of the money that Google makes is from advertising. Even Gmail is a way for advertising that forms a part of the earnings. Records show that for every search made Google earns around $50.

What Search Engines exist?
There are lot of search engines available but as best always stands out, here are a few mostly used search engines Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask.com, AOL.com, Baidu, Wolframalpha, DuckDuckGo, Archive.org, Yandex.ru

Which is the oldest search engine of the Internet?
Although the web was made public in 1990, until 1993 there is no search engine and all indexes are manually made. The search king Google has arrived in 1998 from then, indexation has started to be taken care by software programs. In the 5 year gap of web search availability and Google's birth around 20 search engines were gloriously enjoying, while many failed later.
webcrawler is the oldest still surviving search engine, Lycos, Altavista, Excite, Yahoo, Dogpile, Ask Jeeves, etc are few familiar ones.

Is Google a search engine or library database?
Google can be counted on as a Search Engine as its free and need no user account to search. Also, Databases have information that is credible and already verified. Whereas Google wont stand that way as a publisher can write any thin of their choice and post in the web.
